Harlem River Park Task Force

The Harlem River Park Task Force is comprised of local, citywide and regional organizations working together with elected officials to improve the quality of the environment in Central and East Harlem. The Harlem CDC Planning Department’s director leads this task force, which assists the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation in designing and building a park planned for the Harlem River waterfront from 125th to 145th Streets. Once completed, the park will connect to an existing esplanade south of 125th Street, and eventually to the planned greenway around Manhattan.

Phase I of Harlem River Park, extending from 132nd to 138th Streets, was opened to the public in November 2002. Construction of Phases II and III, from 138th to 145th Streets, was completed in the summer of 2009 and is now open to the public. Included in the section is an environmentally friendly waterfront edge treatment designed through a collaborative effort involving the Harlem River Park Task Force, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, New York City Economic Development Corporation, New York State Department of State and the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance that is a model for the rest of the city. In addition to preserving the environment, the park is a platform for local artists to express the rich cultural heritage of the adjacent communities.
