Montefiore Park is bounded by Broadway and Hamilton Place, from 136th to 138th Streets. Its centerpiece is the City College/137th Street subway station of the #1 line. Currently, the park consists of a narrow fenced winding path from the subway station to the intersection of 138th Street and Hamilton Place. The path is heavily used by students attending City College and PS 192. The intersections at 136th and 138th Streets are very dangerous for pedestrians as cars zoom up Hamilton Place.
By closing Hamilton Place from 136th to 138th Streets, we improve
pedestrian safety and create a much larger park that can host
community events and casual social interaction among residents and
visitors. It can also be a centerpiece for local artists to display
their work on a permanent and/or revolving basis. The location is
ideal because of its high visibility, being on a busy commercial
thoroughfare and at a major subway stop. |
